Help! My Central Air Conditioner Is Not Cooling My Home

Utah summers can be brutal, with scorching temperatures often soaring to 100 degrees Fahrenheit or even higher. This makes an efficient air conditioning system or central AC unit something most residents don’t want to live without. If you’ve recently noticed that your central air conditioner is not cooling your home like it used to, then you may need to reach out to a HVAC company for repair, service, or even a replacement.

First Things First

Before you call out for emergency air conditioner repair, troubleshooting your unit first may help you avoid the cost of a service call.

First, check to make sure that your thermostat is actually switched to the “on” position, and then check the breaker box to make sure the breaker that powers the unit has not tripped. If neither of these holds true, then check the air filter inside the unit to make sure it’s clean (replace if dirty). And as a final step, look at the outside unit to ensure that it’s not overly dirty, which can cause your unit to fail to cool your home properly. If it is, gently clean the fins on the unit’s condenser with your garden hose.

When To Call The Pros

If none of these troubleshooting tips help, then it’s time to reach out to a professional for assistance. Your unit may be suffering from:

  • Leaking refrigerant. Low refrigerant levels can affect your AC’s ability to cool the home. Because it runs in a closed loop, if the refrigerant is low, then there’s a leak that a HVAC pro needs to fix.
  • Duct leaks. Ducts that leak must be sealed professionally using special tape and sealant.
  • Compressor woes. This important component of your AC system circulates your unit’s refrigerant. If it goes bad, then you will experience reduced cooling capacity until it is repaired or replaced. Unless your AC is under warranty, your HVAC professional may recommend replacing your entire system if the compressor goes out and repairs are out of the question.
