Drip, drip, splash your home is flooded in a flash! Yup, it’s the dreaded homeowner’s nightmare of a plumbing emergency. Nobody wants it, and we all want to avoid it, but many of us don’t know how! One of the best ways to kick plumbing issues before they become emergencies is through copper repiping.
So, if you are looking to prevent a major plumbing emergency, here’s when you should consider copper repiping:
Have you been noticing a constant decline in your water pressure? Is it taking longer and longer to wash the shampoo suds out of your hair; this could be due to a blocked pipe! Corroded pipes can cause rust to clog the water flowing through and leave you with erratic or lower than normal water pressure.
Another sign that your pipes are corroded and need to be repiped is your water quality. If you are noticing a metallic smell that starts off with a brownish, rusted hue, it’s time to call your plumber.
Patching could be an option, but if the problem is becoming more and more frequent, you’ll want to consider repiping with copper as it’s less prone to corrosion.
One of the most common plumbing issues is also one of the hardest to pinpoints. Leaks can be small that they can often be hard to spot the primary source. When the leaks become more constant, it can be due to rust and a replacement might be your best option.
Plumbing has an expiration date, and the best thing any homeowner can do is replace them before they burst! No matter what material your pipes are made of the average lifespan ranges from 40- 70 years old. So if you are noticing all the above and more, it might be time for some updates!

Your AC filters play a huge part in your health and indoor air quality, yet they can often be neglected. Not all air filters are made the same, and some require different care than others but the best part, you have options! Whether you are looking for more allergy protection or little maintenance there is a filter for you! So next time you are about to change your AC air filters, here is how to know which is best for you and your home:
For a disposable filter that you just have to worry about changing, look for fiberglass. Often called throw away filters, they should be replaced every 30 days and are pretty cost effective too. They are made from spun glass and fiberglass material and are ideal for capturing large particles of dust and lint.
Another disposable option is Pleated Filter, and the difference is in the protection. They have a longer lifespan and can filter out dust, pollen, pet dander, mold, and bacteria. They are a bit more costly initially, but if you factor in the health benefits and their lifespan, the cost evens out.
If you’re trying to be a bit more eco-friendly in your home, look for washable filters! They are best for catching dust and soot but will need regular cleaning. Since there is no need to replace them, they are better for the environment, but their filtration is limited, as certain pollutants such as dog hair and smoke will not be filtered out.
A High-Efficiency Particulate Air filter or HEPA filter is extremely thick and will remove the largest amount of airborne particles leaving you with hospital grade air. Because of this, they will restrict airflow and could cause your system to work overtime and decrease its energy efficiency.

Oh, that slow, annoying drip, that spurt of water that splashes you every time you turn on the faucet. We’ve all experienced it, and we’ve often ignored it — but luckily some of the most common causes of a leaky faucet can quickly become a DIY quick fix.
So, if you are dealing with a constant faucet drip, here’s what to look for:
A damaged part is probably the most common cause of a leaky faucet and one that can be easily fixed too! If it’s a steady drip, it could be an issue inside the tap.
It could be a seal issue, a problem with the o-ring or as simple as needing a new washer. If you are noticing a drip, this is the first place you should check.
If your pesky leak doesn’t seem like it’s due to damaged parts, your next step is to test the cartridge; this is the part that connects to the handle, and after time it can get worn out. It’s easily replaceable just be sure to measure it carefully so that you are replacing it with the right part.
So if neither of these seems to be the issue, the next step is to look at your water pressure. Water pressure that is too high can cause water to back up in other areas of your faucet, and with nowhere to go, it can lead to a leak. Though it’s not an immediate issue that needs fixing, you’ll want to consider lowering your water pressure so that further damage doesn’t occur.
So now that you’ve gotten the easy fixes out of the way, it’s time to consider a bigger one — broken plumbing. Now, this is not a standard issue but is one that can occur.
If there is a crack in a pipe, it can cause leaks under your sink and you might also find that the faucet is connected to will randomly drip. If this is your issue, you’ll want to contact your local plumber to take a look.

Oh summer, how we love thee! But the pesky humidity that comes along with the summer heat — not so much! Though cooling of your house might be as easy as blasting the AC, the humidity fight can sometimes be a bit more challenging. So here are just a few ways you can maintain a dry and comfortable home:
Beyond fogging up the bathroom mirror, long hot showers increase steam, humidity, and can even cause mold. So if you are looking to cut down on damage and moisture, shorten your showers. A quick cold shower will keep the home moisture down and improve your skin and hair!
A clogged or dusty filter can affect your air quality, reduce the air flow, and increase humidity. To give your AC the full chance to fight off the moisture — clean and change your air filters regularly. A clean filter will also help prevent allergies and lower your electric bill.
Your dryer can put off a lot of heat! But did you know line drying your clothes indoors can also increase humidity? So now that the summer sun is shining, why not put it to good use and line dry outdoors! Bonus — line drying your clothes can not only help your fight indoor humidity, but it can improve the smell too.
One of the best ways to decrease moisture is to increase air flow! Use your ceiling fans and make sure they are moving counter clockwise. Using your fans along with your AC will help draw cooler air from the floor and distribute it throughout the room. To save energy, only utilize fans when the rooms are occupied.

No matter what the size of your bathroom is, chances are you not fully utilizing your space options. If your bathroom is space-deprived, but a bathroom remodel just isn’t in your budget, these seven unique storage solutions can help:
1. Utilize Wall Space. Every bit of unused space can be a new storage opportunity. You can hang a few baskets, or rope together a tower of buckets, either way; you’ll gain yourself some floating shelves and storage. Looking for a hidden storage space — build some shelves between your wall studs.
2. Think Above the Sink. Have a little room between your mirror and sink? Use it! Add a ledge to hold your soaps, toothbrush holder, or anything that would usually take up sink space. If you are looking for a bit more width and storage, add a slotted wooden box instead.
3. But Don’t Forget Under the Sink. If your bathroom contains a pedestal sink, then your storage worries can be put to rest. Place some storage baskets under the sink and a decorative skirt. The new skirt will hide the baskets while dressing up the sink. If you are looking for added shelves, consider adding a wrap around shelf to your pedestal sink.
4. Create a DIY Project. There are many DIY ways you can save tons of space. If your bathroom storage space is being taken up by your makeup collection, it’s time to hang it up — literally. With an old picture frame, a metal sheet, some glue, and magnets — you can make a magnet makeup board to hang on the wall. You’ll now have added space and some wall art!
5. Add Several Towel Racks. Towels are one of the most necessary things in your bathroom, but it can also be the biggest space waster. If you have an empty bathroom door, add a few towel racks. Adding a double or even triple towel rack to the back of the door can help you store your towels in an organized and space saving manner.
6. Get creative with Your Towel Hangers. If the back of the door towel hangers just doesn’t work for you, there are other options! To obtain a towel rack that lays flush with the wall, create one out of rope. You can also mount retro door knobs, or add an old wine rack above the toilet. No matter what your style is, there are plenty of ways to get creative with towel storage.
7. Install A Full-Length Medicine Cabinet. Have an overstuffed medicine cabinet? Are you tired of ducking flying bottles every time you open the door? Well, why not invest in a full-length one! It will give you way more storage, but you’ll also have a full-length mirror right in your bathroom.

Clean water is a necessity that we all need to live, but in many areas, especially Salt Lake City, hard water is a major issue; luckily there are many affordable ways to tackle it. Whether it’s water softening, conditioning, or purification, the benefits are significant.
Here are just a few of the reasons why you could benefit from water conditioning:
Water purification is essential for clean drinking water. Water from the tap can have impurities such as phosphates, sulfides, copper, and lead which over time can cause some serious health risks.
Drinking clean filtered water protects your body from diseases which can lead to overall greater health. Beyond being the best move for your health, filtered water is known to have a clean, crisp taste that unfiltered tap water lacks.
Filtered water is good for you inside and out! With cleaner water you’ll get a better lather with your shampoo and soaps, leaving you with softer, cleaner, and smoother hair and skin.
Hard water also affects your dishwasher and washing machine. With soft water you’ll need less detergent and soap, your whites will stay whiter, and your fabrics will be soft. Water conditioning will also extend the life of your clothes, saving you money overall!
Choosing to filter your tap water will significantly decrease your use of bottled water saving you waste and cash! Using treated water on your appliances will make them more energy efficient.
Water waste will drop, and fewer detergents and soaps will be needed. Overall you will extend the life of your appliances, your clothes, use less product and save money on your energy bill. Talk about a win-win!
Scott Hale Plumbing is the intelligent choice for all your water softening, conditioning and purification needs in Salt Lake City – so for help with repairs or with choosing your new system, request service or call us today.
It’s that time of year again — time to start cranking the A/C! But when is the last time you’ve gotten it tuned up? Your A/C is a significant investment and with proper maintenance, you can not only extend your cooling system’s life but save yourself some cash.
So, if you haven’t scheduled one already, here’s why your A/C needs a tune-up:
A well-maintained air conditioner means cleaner air vents. When you schedule maintenance, your technician will check all your air filters and replace them if needed. Regularly cleaning and replacing your filters decreases allergens and increases air quality.
If your cooling system isn’t working up to it’s potential, it’s probably wasting energy. A dirty, unkempt cooling system will have to work harder to pump out cold air. Keeping your A/C clean and maintained will prevent wasted energy and save you money.
A little problem can turn into a big one. If a regular A/C tune up is part of your routine, you’ll be able to spot and fix issues that might not always be visible to the naked eye. A professional can replace worn, old, or damaged parts before your system ultimately fails. Though a tune up might seem like an extra expense, a new air conditioning system is far more expensive.
If you are looking for a tuneup in the Salt Lake City area, the experts at Scott Hale will be sure your home stays as tidy as when we entered. Our technicians always wear covers over their boots and lay mats under the areas in which they work. We promise that they will never leave without first tidying up.

The dreaded clogged toilet — we’ve all been there! The water is rising, and so is your frustration. But don’t worry — it could be an easy fix. So the next time you get into a flushing war with your toilet, follow these steps on how to handle a clog:
When the toilet is still running, and the water just won’t seem to go down — the first thing you must do is resist the urge to flush! Panic often sets in, and we find ourselves jiggling the handle repeatedly.
The more you flush, the more overflow you will have. So instead of standing in dirty toilet water, take a deep breathe and remove the toilet lid. Find the flapper and push it down to stop water from entering the bowl. Once the water has finished entering the bowl, it’s time to shut off the water supply.
Now that you’ve prevented a flood, it’s time to get your tools ready! A plunger and plumbing snake are all you’ll need. Now that you have everything at hand, it’s time to take the plunge!
Place your plunger in the toilet gently and push until the bell is full of air and creates a seal. Begin to push vigorously in and out keeping the seal tight. Repeat this about 15-20 times. If you are making no progress, it’s time to move on to the snake!
If a plunger isn’t doing the job, snake it! A drain snake should be fed into your pipes until it encounters the clog. Once you’ve hit the clog begin turning clockwise, this will help break through or into the clogged material loosening it up.
If you are still not seeing success — the toilet might have to be removed, and it’s time to call a professional.
